Our Decking Restoration Process
Every deck is different, so the exact process depends on the timber, its condition and any products that have previously been applied.
01 — Inspect
We assess the condition of the deck, looking at the timber, fixings, damaged decking boards, organic growth and any existing coatings.
02 — Clean
The decking is professionally cleaned to remove accumulated dirt and organic contamination and prepare the timber for the restoration work ahead.
03 — Prepare
Once sufficiently dry, we prepare the timber for refinishing. This may include minor repairs and dealing with loose, rough or deteriorated areas.
04 — Sand
Where required, weathered timber and remaining surface coatings are sanded to produce a more consistent surface ready for treatment.
05 — Protect
A suitable high quality decking oil or protective finish is applied according to the condition and type of timber and the finish agreed with you.
06 — Final Check
We inspect the completed decking, clear the working area and provide practical advice on looking after the newly restored surface.

Softwood Decking
Softwood is widely used for residential decking and can respond very well to restoration when the underlying timber remains in suitable condition.
The restoration process can remove accumulated weathering, improve rough areas and prepare the surface for a fresh protective treatment.
Older softwood can also develop deep staining or discolouration that isn't always completely removable. We'll assess this before starting and explain what we realistically expect the finished result to look like.
Hardwood Decking
Hardwood decking can gradually lose its richness as exposure to sunlight and weather turns the surface grey.
Careful cleaning and preparation can reveal more of the timber's natural character before an appropriate finish is applied.
The exact approach depends on the species, condition of the boards and any previous treatments.

Cleaning, drying and surface preparation all form part of the job. Where sanding is required, we concentrate on creating a suitable, consistent surface before applying the agreed finish.
Existing coatings can sometimes complicate restoration, particularly where several different products have been applied over the years. We'll assess this as part of the initial survey and recommend the most sensible approach.

Once the timber has been properly prepared, a protective finish can help enhance the appearance of the wood while providing protection against weathering and moisture.

Raised Deck Restoration – Anlaby
This raised timber deck in Anlaby had not been treated for more than 10 years and required considerably more than a surface clean. A number of decking boards needed attention, along with repairs and reinforcement to parts of the supporting base.
We thoroughly cleaned the decking, carried out the necessary repairs to strengthen and stabilise affected areas, and prepared the timber ready for refinishing. Once prepared and dry, the deck was finished with an Amber Light Oak decking oil, helping to restore the colour of the timber while providing protection from the elements.
The result was a cleaner, stronger and better-protected deck, extending the useful life of the existing structure rather than simply replacing it.

Natural Oak Decking Restoration
This timber deck in Hessle was approximately three years old and had received no additional protection beyond the original pressure treatment applied during manufacture. With surrounding trees and foliage, the timber had developed heavy organic staining and discolouration.
We thoroughly cleaned the decking to remove the built-up contamination before treating the timber with oxalic acid to help brighten and restore its natural appearance. Once properly prepared and dry, we applied two good coats of Natural Oak decking oil, bringing warmth back to the timber while providing the additional protection it had previously been missing.
The result was a cleaner, brighter and properly protected deck, with the Natural Oak finish enhancing the grain and character of the timber.

Decking & Fence Restoration – Beverley
This timber deck in Beverley had previously been finished with decking paint, but the coating had failed over the winter following poor surface preparation. Two large trees beside the property also kept much of the area shaded and damp, creating challenging conditions for the timber.
We removed the failing finish and properly prepared the decking before carrying out a number of repairs to reinforce and strengthen the supporting base. Once the timber was ready, we applied two coats of Rosewood decking oil, giving the deck a rich finish while helping protect it from the elements.
While completing the restoration, we also repainted the surrounding fencing, changing it from Cedar Red to a more modern and calming Sage Green. The combination completely refreshed the area and gave the decking and fencing a much more complementary finish.

Can you restore very old decking?
Potentially. Age alone doesn't determine whether decking can be restored. The condition of the boards and supporting structure is more important. We'll assess the timber and tell you whether restoration is worthwhile.
Does decking have to be cleaned before restoration?
Usually, yes. The timber needs to be properly cleaned and prepared before refinishing. Cleaning removes contamination and also gives us a much clearer view of the condition of the surface.
Do you sand all decking?
Not necessarily. The amount of sanding required depends on the condition of the timber and any previous finish. We only carry out the preparation necessary for the particular deck.
Can you remove old decking stain or paint?
Some previous coatings can be removed or reduced through preparation and sanding, but this depends on the product and how deeply it has penetrated the timber. We'll assess existing coatings before agreeing the restoration process.
Do you repair damaged decking boards?
We can carry out minor repairs and replace individual boards where practical. Significant structural repairs or extensive rotten timber may require specialist carpentry work.
What finish do you use on restored decking?
We use suitable exterior timber treatments and favour quality decking oils where appropriate. The product will depend on the type and condition of the timber and the finish required.
Can you restore composite decking?

How long does decking restoration take?
It depends on the size and condition of the deck, the preparation required and, importantly, the weather. Timber needs suitable drying conditions between certain stages, so restoration cannot always be completed on consecutive days.
When is the best time to restore decking?
Restoration and refinishing are best carried out when weather conditions allow the timber to dry properly and the chosen treatment to be applied within its required conditions. For that reason, most restoration work is weather dependent.
How do I know whether I need cleaning or restoration?
If your decking is simply dirty, green or slippery, cleaning may be sufficient. If the timber is grey, rough, heavily weathered or has a deteriorating previous finish, restoration is more likely to be appropriate. Send us some photographs if you're unsure.
