Autumn Gutter Cleaning: When to Clean Your Gutters & Are Gutter Guards Worth It?

Autumn is one of the most important times of year to keep an eye on your gutters.

As leaves begin to fall and the weather becomes wetter, gutters can quickly fill with leaves, moss, twigs and other debris. If that material is allowed to build up, rainwater may no longer flow freely towards the downpipes and drains.

But when is the best time to have your gutters cleaned? Can you safely do it yourself? And do gutter brushes and gutter guards actually help?

Here’s our practical advice for homeowners across Hull and East Yorkshire.

When Is the Best Time to Have Your Gutters Cleaned?

For many properties, late autumn into early winter is a sensible time for a professional gutter clearance, once the majority of nearby leaves have fallen.

Cleaning too early in autumn can sometimes mean the gutters simply fill up again a few weeks later.

However, there isn’t one perfect date for every property.

If your house is surrounded by mature trees, you may need the gutters checking more frequently. Likewise, if you already have overflowing gutters or a blocked downpipe, there is little benefit in waiting until every last leaf has fallen.

A useful approach is to check your gutters during periods of heavy rain. If water is flowing over the front or back of the gutter rather than towards the downpipe, something may need attention.



For many homes, one professional clearance each year may be sufficient, while properties close to trees or with recurring moss problems may benefit from more regular checks.

Are Gutter Brushes a Good Idea?

Gutter brushes are commonly sold as a simple way of preventing leaves from entering gutters. They usually consist of a long cylindrical brush that sits inside the gutter, allowing rainwater to pass through while supposedly preventing larger debris from settling inside.

They can help stop some larger leaves, but in our experience they can create problems of their own.

Moss, seeds and smaller debris can become caught within the bristles rather than being washed through the gutter. Once this material becomes wet and compacted, it can restrict the flow of rainwater and make the gutter more difficult to clear.

In most cases, moss and debris had become trapped within the brushes and was restricting the flow of water. They might stop some leaves, but in the long term they can cause problems without regular maintenance.”

There's another practical problem: when the gutter eventually needs clearing, the brushes normally have to be removed before the debris underneath can be properly extracted.

For that reason, we don't regard gutter brushes as a fit-and-forget solution. If you already have them installed, we'd recommend periodically checking what's happening underneath them rather than assuming the gutter is clear simply because the brush is in place.

What About Gutter Guards?

Gutter guards and mesh covers work on a similar principle. They attempt to prevent larger debris from entering the gutter while allowing water through.

Again, they can be useful in certain situations, but they don't eliminate gutter maintenance.

Moss and fine debris can collect on top of the guard or work their way through smaller openings. Leaves can also sit across the surface and temporarily restrict water flow.

Another issue is visibility.

A gutter can appear relatively clear from below because the guard is covering it, while organic material has gradually accumulated underneath.

If you're considering gutter guards, it is worth remembering that "protected" doesn't mean "maintenance-free".

They still need checking and, occasionally, removing so the gutter underneath can be properly inspected and cleaned.

Can You Clean Your Own Gutters?

Yes — on some properties.

If you live in a bungalow or have a genuinely safe method of accessing a low-level gutter, DIY cleaning can be straightforward.

The most important consideration isn't the dirt. It's working safely at height.

Avoid stretching sideways from a ladder or trying to reach sections that are beyond comfortable reach. Moving a ladder several times is inconvenient, but it is considerably safer than overreaching.

Wear gloves because gutter debris can contain sharp objects and animal waste, and avoid pushing a blockage further into the downpipe.

Once loose debris has been removed, check that water can travel freely towards the outlet.

If the property is two or three storeys high, access is awkward, the ground is uneven, or you're simply uncomfortable working from a ladder, it makes sense to leave the job to someone properly equipped.

The important distinction is that clearing and cleaning aren't quite the same thing.

What Happens If You Leave Blocked Gutters?

A blocked gutter doesn't automatically mean serious damage to your property, but repeatedly allowing water to overflow where it shouldn't can create avoidable problems.

Depending on the property, overflowing water can contribute to staining on walls, deterioration around the roofline, unwanted moisture around the building and additional weight within the gutter itself.

Standing organic material can also provide ideal conditions for weeds and other growth.

Regular maintenance is generally much easier than dealing with problems after they have developed.

Our Advice for Autumn

• Don't assume your gutters are clear simply because you can't see anything from the ground.
• Keep an eye on them when it rains.
• If water is flowing normally towards the downpipes and there are no obvious signs of overflowing, they may be perfectly fine.
• If water is pouring over the edge, vegetation is growing from them, or you know they haven't been cleared for several years, it's probably time to have them checked.
• And if you have gutter brushes or guards fitted, remember that the gutter underneath still needs occasional inspection.
